Osprey Levity and Lumina

As lightweight packs from cottage industry gear companies become more and more popular, traditional pack manufacturers are stepping up and developing lighter pack models. The Osprey Levity and women’s specific Lumina both come in 45 and 60 liter versions and all packs in this series weigh in at under two pounds. We liked that Osprey shaved weight while still keeping some key convenience features like zippered pockets in the lid and a safety whistle on the sternum strap. The Levity and Lumina are designed for ultralight backpackers carrying ultralight gear. The 45 liter packs are designed to carry up to 25 pounds and the 60 liter packs can handle up to 30 pounds of gear.

Our favorite feature: Suspension-style mesh back panel for ventilation, a feature often sacrificed on ultralight packs

Our biggest concern: No hip belt pockets

Mountainsmith Scream

If you are shopping for a lightweight pack on a tight budget be sure to check out the Mountainsmith Scream 55 or women’s specific Scream 50 WSD. Newly redesigned for 2018, the Scream 55 weighs under three pounds and has a weight capacity of 45 pounds. It features a hydration sleeve and two large barrel-shaped external pockets.

Our favorite feature: Price, the Scream 55 retails from the manufacturer at $159.95.

Our biggest concern: Comfort, this is a one size only pack that may not work for all torso lengths. It also lacks a mesh ventilation panel.
